Good Earth Lighting Bulbs
![]() i have a beef fluorescent bulbs would like to hear others in site on this? pk i have a beef with fluorescent lights people think there doing good for the environment cuz were not burning as much coal to create electricity, so how many people do u think just trow a way the fluorescent bulbs? The lethal dose of mecury for an average sized person is about 2 g. A low energy lightbulb contains around 5 mg of mercury, so if 1 billion people threw away a bulb this would equate to 1 billion x 5 mg = about 5 tonnes or mercury - that is if ALL of the mercury in ALL of the bulbs thrown away was able to be liberated and entered the environment (in practise some of it would not, it would remain bound in the coatings inside the bulbs). However, even if you take the 5 tonnes figure as being accurate, this is 5 tonnes spread over the entire planet, not 5 tonnes sitting in one place! Given that there are around 6.8 billion people in the world, 5 tonnes of mercury split among 6.8 billion gives an average of about 0.7 mg per person, or 0.035% of the lethal dose. In order words, practically nothing. Even if EVERY PERSON in the world threw away a low energy lightbulb the amount of mercury per person would only be 6.8 x higher than what I have calculated above (which would be 0.21% of the lethal dose). The key thing about low energy bulbs is not only that they use around 20% of the energy of conventional ones, but that they last significantly longer. When I used to have conventional lightbulbs in my home they lasted on average 6 - 12 months. The low energy bulbs I have now are anywhere between 5 and 10 years old - and they're all still working. You have served to illustrate, once again, that the very real problem with the whole "green" debate is non-scientists trying to muscle in on what is essentially a scientific based issue. "idk what the lethal dose is but im thinking it way under that...." <---- Need I say more? |

How Environmental Changes Can Be Good For You
I know you read that title, and thought, "this guy is cracked", but you would be wrong. You cannot make that kind of assumption just because you have not thought how environmental changes can be good.
If we take a few minutes and keep our minds open, there just might be something of value learned from this short article, and with that said; lets get to it.
Did you know that planting trees and shrubs around your home, can not only help to cool your home, but they will absorb carbon monoxide from the air, and this is a good change for the environment. A good change.
Pretty cool, huh? Now what other "good" environmental changes can we think up? How about recycling?
That would work. Instead of throwing away all of those plastic water bottles, thinking what is the gain in saving such a small plastic bottle -I have an answer, the "gain" is this: Did you know that the petroleum used to create that one "little" plastic water bottle, would have lit a 75watt light bulb, for 24 hours? 24 hours! So a "bottle saved, is 24 hours of light earned. I could not resist.
Now who can argue against that? But lets not stop with the water bottles, how about the 2-litre bottles? Sure you need to give them a quick rinse so they wont draw bees, and ants, while in storage, but the savings to the environment are so worth it. Actually, any plastic marked recyclable, or has a triangle on the bottom with a number 1, or a 2. These are all recyclable. All of which contain petroleum.
And, what about that Sunday newspaper, that was just thrown in the trash? Totally recyclable. Now your saving trees. So you are planting trees, and shrubs, and now you are even helping to save the trees that are already growing. You add this up and you are absorbing even more carbon monoxide. Now that definately makes for some very good environmental changes.
I did promise to keep this article short, so I am going to try to tie it up here with these final remarks.
It would be prudent to call your local recycling facility and learn exactly all they can take, because everything we are recycling is "not" going to the landfill, and once again we have discovered "how environmental changes can be good.
Thank you for reading another info2SaveEarth.com article. My goal here at info2saveearth.com, is to provide everyone interested in taking part in our efforts to save earth, for our grandchildrens, grandchildren, the information, and the resources to do just that.
I do not consider myself a fanatic, but I do try to do anything I can that I believe will make this world an even better place for my new granddaughter to live, and one day, hopefully, she will be thinking the same way about protecting the environment, so she can watch "her" grandchildren grow.
